"You can never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."
Buckminster Fuller
Four critical elements:
1) Creating what we REALLY want The process is first about inventing a desired Future beyond anything that extrapolating the past could predict. A Future that is an expression of vision, of the corporate mission, and core values. Then it is about realizing that future, being driven by it no matter what the circumstances are. This is about creating what we really, REALLY, want, not the best we think we can do. Not compromise, settling for, or what our best efforts will give us. In putting the Future First we are informed by present circumstances and past accomplishments, we just don't allow ourselves to be limited by them. Continue. .
2) A Creative Process Informed by Data and Analysis, But Not Limited by Them
A bold future cannot be reached by merely improving upon what already exists. The Future First "meshes" the creative process and available data and knowledge. Continue. . .
3) The Critical Starting Point: A Commitment to a Bold Outcome" vs Having a Goal The Future First proceeds from a commitment to a bold future that is highly desirable, yet marks such a significant break with the past that it appears impossible. Its realization will be a breakthrough for the organization. Commitment is an essential ingredient: essential in getting clarity and a unified focus and direction; essential to the drive to overcome barriers, and to alter oneself to achieve the desired bold futures. Continue. . .
4) The Future is ALWAYS the Driver
In the Future First mode, we build our organization from a vision of the future, informed by but unfettered by current limitations, issues or roadblocks to success. To bridge the gap back from that future to the present, we must invent and discover new ways of working. We build and nurture a new culture that is consistent with what we intend. Our driver is the Future, no matter what the circumstances are. |
