By transformational change, we mean a change that is not merely an extension or improvement of the past - even a large one - but a state change, one that gives a completely new place from which to think and operate. This state change can be personal and organizational.
  • Before the fact, the new possibility envisioned is audacious, bold and compelling - a Bold Future, not simply a better version of business-as-usual. It migth even be viewed as infeasible by some.
    • It calls for a new level of imagination, fearlessness, innovation and collaboration
    • It excites the people of the organization, and unleashes their imagination, passion and creativity
  • After the fact, you will say that we have more than a large improvement, we have a different organization, a state-change, a transformation.
  • Achieving this state change requires expanding the limits of the mindset in which the individual/the organization operates. This mindset includes the attitudes, perspectives, rationales and logic; it includes how the individual and the organization perceive their problems and opportunities, and the range of solutions they invent to deal with them.
The Relationship between "Bold Futures", "Transformation" and "Breakthrough"
  • Breakthroughs are the outcomes of Bold Goals, or Bold Futures.
  • Breakthroughs are essential to produce a transformational change: they alter the ways of working, develop new skills, expand the knowledge, and fundamentally alter what the organization is now aspirating to.  In the process of achieving them, organizations create a larger platform for resultsEven if the area of breakthrough is limited to one part of the organization, if significant, it will be socialized in other parts
  • Setting Bold Futures and generating breakthroughs in their realization, if the scope is significant enough, will produce change that will be a transformation, not just an extension or improvement of the past.
The Future First is more that a process:  it is a mindset, a set of skills and a way to think and act - a discipline - to produce breakthroughs and transformation, by design.
From acorn to oak tree - a transformation, not a linear change.
